Matthew: My first pick is the woman who I’ve always wanted to adopt me, Hillary Clinton.
Why: Hillary stands up for minority rights, she fights for everyday people all while maintaining the status as one of the most powerful people in global politics.
Marg: My first pick is Jane Goodall!
Why: Jane has worked with chimpanzees for over fifty-years, her research and observations revolutionized the way we see Great Apes and ourselves, and her passion and activism on behalf of these animals is an absolute inspiration.
Why: Not only is she an amazingly gifted actor, but if you spend some time Youtubing Meryl Streep (and believe me I have) you will find out that she is funny, charming, kind, an activist, charismatic, smart and perfect.
Marg: Amanda Fucking Palmer
Why: AFP is such a wild, creative, brave, clever, honest, fun, and talented performer - a true artist, in multiple senses of the word!
Matthew: Aung San Suu Kyi
Why: A Nobel Peace Prize winner, Aung San Suu Kyi has unjustly lived almost 15 years of of her life under house arrest all while being a champion for human rights, and a hero to the people of Burma.
Why: Leader of "Women Journalists Without Chains", Tawakkul is a human rights activist fighting for womens' rights and political reform, who in 2011 became the first Arabic woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
Matthew: Bernadette Peters
Why: A talent like Bernadette Peters does not come around often, she’s an American theatre icon, 2 time Tony winner and a fierce animal rights activist- on top of it all she seems like a genuine kind and humble person.
Why: She was the first woman to become head writer of SNL and she downplays it (because no big D, whatevs), is the star and creator of 30 Rock, and wrote the hilarious Bossypants - she’s brilliant and weird and funny, and despite all her success, remains accessible and humble.
Matthew: For my final pick I was very tempted to pick my cat, Stevie Joanne, however; part of our criteria was that the candidate had to self identify as a woman. Now at best Stevie self identifies as “meow”, she is out of the running- So I choose........Jane Fonda!
Why: Jane Fonda has seen and done more in her life than most people could ever dream- actress, entrepreneur, political activist and author are just a few of the titles that she can put on her resume.
Marg: My final choice, after much debate, is Emma Thompson!
Why: Not only is Emma Thompson a talented and brave performer (watch Wit, you'll see), she is also a skilled screenwriter (winning the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar in 1996 for Sense and Sensibility), as well as an outspoken animal and human rights activist - I will watch pretty much anything with her in it, even Nanny McPhee.
