Matt and Marg: Emmy Picks!

The Emmy's are tonight and in true Skinny Chai fashion- here are our predictions:

The Big Bang Theory • CBS
Curb Your Enthusiasm • HBO
Girls • HBO
Modern Family • ABC
30 Rock • NBC
Veep • HBO

Matt: I'm rooting for Veep. It's sharp, funny and worthy of the top honor (seeing how Parks & Rec isn't even nominated)

Marg: I am on a real Girls kick right now, but see it going one of just two ways: If the Emmy voters have decided to be smart, Veep will win. If they were frightened of all the new words being thrown at them, Modern Family will win.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series

Girls • HBO
Lena Dunham as Hannah Horvath
Mike & Molly • CBS
Melissa McCarthy as Molly Flynn
 New Girl • FOX
Zooey Deschanel as Jess Day
 Nurse Jackie • Showtime
Edie Falco as Jackie Peyton
 Parks And Recreation • NBC
Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope
 30 Rock • NBC
Tina Fey as Liz Lemon
 Veep • HBO
Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Selina Meyer

Matt: This is a tough one. I'd love to see Zooey Deschanel take it, but I think it will probably go to Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Melissa McCarthy won it last year, but I think that probably had more to do with Bridesmaids than it did Mike & Molly. I'd also love to see Amy Poehler win, but for some stupid reason the Emmy's have a thing out for Parks & Rec.

Marg: I love so many of the women on this list, but feel strongly that this is Amy Poehler's year - she is in the public eye right now for things unrelated to her amazing show, but has remained utterly graceful and gracious throughout. The past season of that amazing show was a work of art, and the Leslie Knope journey therein should be rewarded!

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series

The Big Bang Theory • CBS
Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper
Curb Your Enthusiasm • HBO
Larry David as Himself
House Of Lies • Showtime
Don Cheadle as Marty Kaan
Louie • FX Networks
Louis C.K. as Louie
30 Rock • NBC
Alec Baldwin as Jack Donaghy
Two And A Half Men • CBS
Jon Cryer as Alan Harper

Matt: I don't watch any of these shows. So I'll say Jim Parsons, just because he's won it in the past.

Marg: I love me some Alec Baldwin, and he could take home the prize because 30 Rock is going into it's short final season so it will likely be the last opportunity to reward his outstanding work on that show. He doesn't fully deserve it for this past season though, which was uneven at best. Talent-wise, I think Louis C.K. should be the winner - but I worry that the Emmy voters will continue to be perverse by giving it to Jon Cryer yet again.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series

The Big Bang Theory • CBS
Mayim Bialik as Amy Farrah Fowler
Desperate Housewives • ABC
Kathryn Joosten as Karen McCluskey
Modern Family • ABC
Julie Bowen as Claire Dunphy
Modern Family • ABC
Sofia Vergara as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett
Nurse Jackie • Showtime
Merritt Wever as Zoey Barkow
Saturday Night Live • NBC
Kristen Wiig as various characters

Matt: How awesome would it be if Blossom won an emmy! But in all seriousness it should go to Kristen Wigg, but Kathryn Joosten will probably win because she died. Just telling it like it is...

Marg: I think it is absurd that Joosten was nominated just because she died. Desperate Housewives wouldn't be nominated for anything at this point had she not, and things would be fine. Kristen Wiig would be an awesome winner - I see it going to Sofia Vergara maybe.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series

Modern Family • ABC
Ed O'Neill as Jay Pritchett
Modern Family • ABC
Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell Pritchett
Modern Family • ABC
Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy
Modern Family • ABC
Eric Stonestreet as Cameron Tucker
 New Girl • FOX
Max Greenfield as Schmidt
Saturday Night Live • NBC
Bill Hader as various characters

Matt: I think Ty Burrell is consistently the funniest actor on Modern Family, and it would be great to see him recognized.

Marg: Modern Family used to be an amazing show... it is no longer an amazing show. Apparently whoever came up with the nominees doesn't actually watch TV, though. I love both the non-Modern Family nominees - it should go to Bill Hader, and to Max Greenfield next year after the list remains exactly the same save for Hader being replaced by the kid who plays Manny.

Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series

Glee • FOX
Dot-Marie Jones as Coach Shannon Beiste
Saturday Night Live • NBC
Maya Rudolph, Host
Saturday Night Live • NBC
Melissa McCarthy, Host
30 Rock • NBC
Elizabeth Banks as Avery Jessup
30 Rock • NBC
Margaret Cho as Kim Jong-il
Two And A Half Men • CBS
Kathy Bates as Charlie Harper

Matt: Okay, I've only seen the 2 SNL nominees, and out of those I'd give it to Mya Rudolph. But I've heard that Margaret Cho as Kim Jong-il was amazing, so it would be great to see her get it.

Marg: Maya Rudolph! She is a damn gem, and that episode was great.

Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series

Curb Your Enthusiasm • HBO
Michael J. Fox as Himself
Modern Family • ABC
Greg Kinnear as Tad
Nurse Jackie • Showtime
Bobby Cannavale as Dr. Mike Cruz
Saturday Night Live • NBC
Jimmy Fallon, Host
30 Rock • NBC
Will Arnett as Devon Banks
30 Rock • NBC
Jon Hamm as Abner and David Brinkley

Matt: Jon Hamm. He's pretty.

Marg: Jon Hamm has a perpetual fart face. It will go to Michael J. Fox because of... you know...

Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series

Community • Remedial Chaos Theory • NBC
Chris McKenna, Written by
Girls • Pilot • HBO
Lena Dunham, Written by
Louie • Pregnant • FX Networks
Louis C.K., Written by
Parks And Recreation • The Debate • NBC
Amy Poehler, Written by
Parks And Recreation • Win, Lose, Or Draw • NBC
Michael Schur, Written by

Matt: Amy Poehler!! This was Parks & Rec's best season. Amy Poehler for the win!

Marg: It SHOULD go to Chris McKenna for Community - Remedial Chaos Theory is no lie, one of the most ingenious pieces of television I have ever seen. It should be studied in classes. BUT, maybe it will go to Lena Dunham? The pilot isn't the best episode of the season, but there was a lot of buzz there. And of course, I'd be happy for each of the Parks & Rec episodes to win - such a good season.

Outstanding Drama Series

Boardwalk Empire • HBO
Breaking Bad • AMC
Downton Abbey • PBS
Game Of Thrones • HBO
Homeland • Showtime
Mad Men • AMC

Matt: A tough one! Both Downton Abbey & Game of Thrones are two of my fav shows on television. If it were up to me, I think I'd give it to Downton Abbey. Only because I still haven't seen season 2 of Game of Thrones, and that's what the nomination is based on.

Marg: Mad Men, always Mad Men.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series

Damages • DirecTV
Glenn Close as Patty Hewes
Downton Abbey • PBS
Michelle Dockery as Lady Mary Crawley
The Good Wife • CBS
Julianna Margulies as Alicia Florrick
Harry's Law • NBC
Kathy Bates as Harriet Korn
Homeland • Showtime
Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison
Mad Men • AMC
Elisabeth Moss as Peggy Olson

Matt: Glen Close in Damages is one of the craziest things I have ever seen.

Marg: I was unaware that the character's last name in Harry's Law was Korn, that is hilarious. I apparently don't watch enough dramas, since I only watch Mad Men here - go Peggy!

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series

Boardwalk Empire • HBO
Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson
Breaking Bad • AMC
Bryan Cranston as Walter White
Dexter • Showtime
Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan
Downton Abbey • PBS
Hugh Bonneville as Robert, Earl of Grantham
Homeland • Showtime
Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody
Mad Men • AMC
Jon Hamm as Don Draper

Matt: The only show I still watch on this list is Downton. So Hugh Bonneville for the win!

Marg: Oh it will probably go to Bryan Cranston because it turns out other people love watching nothing but bad things happen again and again and again.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series

Breaking Bad • AMC
Anna Gunn as Skyler White
Downton Abbey • PBS
Maggie Smith as Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham
Downton Abbey • PBS
Joanne Froggatt as Anna
The Good Wife • CBS
Archie Panjabi as Kalinda Sharma
The Good Wife • CBS
Christine Baranski as Diane Lockhart
 Mad Men • AMC
Christina Hendricks as Joan Holloway Harris

Matt: I love Christine Baranski in The Good Wife, but Maggie Smith is a HUGE part of the success in Downton Abbey. My vote is for Maggie.

Marg: Yes, Christina Hendricks is a personal hero of mine and is an angel sent from heaven to make me feel bad because I don't have large enough hips - so of course I believe she should win by default. But did you see her in this past season of Mad Men? MY GOD. She deserves to win. She needs to win.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series

Breaking Bad • AMC
Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman
Breaking Bad • AMC
Giancarlo Esposito as Gustavo 'Gus' Fring
Downton Abbey • PBS
Brendan Coyle as John Bates
Downton Abbey • PBS
Jim Carter as Mr. Carson
Game Of Thrones • HBO
Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister
Mad Men • AMC
Jared Harris as Lane Pryce

Matt: I think the buzz is around Aaron Paul. I stopped watching Breaking Bad part way through season 2, but he was pretty good. However, my vote is for Jim Carter in Downton. Man makes a good butler!

Marg: Aaron Paul will probably take this home, but Jared Harris was so flippin' good on Mad Men. So good. So sad.

Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series

The Good Wife • CBS
Martha Plimpton as Patti Nyholm
Grey's Anatomy • ABC
Loretta Devine as Adele Webber
Harry's Law • NBC
Jean Smart as D.A. Roseanna Remmick
Mad Men • AMC
Julia Ormond as Marie Calvet
Shameless • Showtime
Joan Cusack as Sheila Jackson
Smash • NBC
Uma Thurman as Rebecca Duvall

Matt: I loves me some Loretta Devine! From the first moment I saw her in Boston Public I identified with her as a brassy black woman. BUT, Jean Smart was the best (and really only good) part of Harry's Law. And she deserves some recognition.

Marg: Ooh, finally a category where I turn away from my beloved Mad Men - I wasn't overly impressed with Ormond, as pretty and french and Roger-Sterling-blowing as she was. I don't watch the other shows though, so.... Loretta Devine for that piece of tripe Grey's Anatomy?

Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series

Breaking Bad • AMC
Mark Margolis as Tio Salamanca
The Good Wife • CBS
Dylan Baker as Colin Sweeney
The Good Wife • CBS
Michael J. Fox as Louis Canning
Justified • FX Networks
Jeremy Davies as Dickie Bennett
Mad Men • AMC
Ben Feldman as Michael Ginsberg
Parenthood • NBC
Jason Ritter as Mark Cyr

Matt: I'm going for Jason Ritter from Parenthood. One of my favorite shows that doesn't get the viewers or recognition it deserves.

Marg: Ginsberg is adorable - but I think Michael J. Fox will take this if he doesn't take it for Curb.

Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series

Downton Abbey • Episode 7
Julian Fellowes, Written by
Homeland • Pilot • Showtime
Alex Gansa, Written by
Howard Gordon, Written by
Gideon Raff, Written by
Mad Men • The Other Woman • AMC
Semi Chellas, Written by
Matthew Weiner, Written by
Mad Men • Commissions And Fees • AMC
Andre Jacquemetton, Written by
Maria Jacquemetton, Written by
Mad Men • Far Away Places • AMC
Matthew Weiner, Written by
Semi Chellas, Written by

Matt: Apparently Homeland is amazing, but the only one I've seen is Downton so it gets my pick.

Marg: I am split between all three of the Mad Men nominees: The Other Woman is... deeply uncomfortable, Commissions and Fees is deepy sad (yet, the scene in the car was so... funny), and Far Away Places is structurally devine and has the sherbert scene, which was amazing. I think I'll give it to The Other Woman - because it gives the most opportunity for conversation.

Outstanding Miniseries or Movie

American Horror Story • FX Networks
Game Change • HBO
Hatfields & McCoys • HISTORY
Hemingway & Gellhorn • HBO
Luther • BBC America
Sherlock: A Scandal In Belgravia (Masterpiece) • PBS

Matt: Game Change will win. The only other possibility is American Horror Story. But I think it will be Game Change.

Marg: Sherlock. 100x Sherlock.

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Miniseries Or A Movie

American Horror Story • FX Networks
Connie Britton as Vivien Harmon
Game Change • HBO
Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin
Hemingway & Gellhorn • HBO
Nicole Kidman as Martha Gellhorn
Missing • ABC
Ashley Judd as Rebecca Winstone
The Song Of Lunch (Masterpiece) • PBS
Emma Thompson as She

Matt: If any category is a sure thing, it's this one. And it will be Julianne Moore.

Marg: I don't know if the Emmy's would give up an opportunity to have Nicole Kidman grace their stage.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie

Game Change • HBO
Woody Harrelson as Steve Schmidt
Hatfields & McCoys • HISTORY
Kevin Costner as 'Devil' Anse Hatfield
Hatfields & McCoys • HISTORY
Bill Paxton as Randall McCoy
Hemingway & Gellhorn • HBO
Clive Owen as Ernest Hemingway
Luther • BBC America
Idris Elba as John Luther
Sherlock: A Scandal In Belgravia (Masterpiece) • PBS
Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes

Matt: Ummm, let's go with.... Kevin Costner. Everyone in Water World deserves an award for something.

Marg: SHERLOCK. BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH!!!

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or A Movie

American Horror Story • FX Networks
Frances Conroy as Moira
American Horror Story • FX Networks
Jessica Lange as Constance Langdon
Game Change • HBO
Sarah Paulson as Nicolle Wallace
Hatfields & McCoys • HISTORY
Mare Winningham as Sally McCoy
Page Eight (Masterpiece) • PBS
Judy Davis as Jill Tankard

Matt: My bet is with Jessica Lange. She's an Emmy fav.

Marg: Sure, why not, Lange.

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Miniseries Or A Movie

American Horror Story • FX Networks
Denis O'Hare as Larry Harvey
Game Change • HBO
Ed Harris as John McCain
Hatfields & McCoys • HISTORY
Tom Berenger as Jim Vance
Hemingway & Gellhorn • HBO
David Strathairn as John Dos Passos
Sherlock: A Scandal In Belgravia (Masterpiece) • PBS
Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson

Matt: Ed Harris, because he's Ed Harris.

Marg: Get out of the way, Martin Freeman needs to collect his prize. He will thank Benedict and they will ride off into the sunset together with their trophies.

Outstanding Variety Series

The Colbert Report • Comedy Central
The Daily Show With Jon Stewart
Jimmy Kimmel Live • ABC
Late Night With Jimmy Fallon
Real Time With Bill Maher • HBO
Saturday Night Live • NBC

Mat: This one is interesting. In my opinion SNL had a fantastic season, BUT, Jimmy Kimmel has really taken off in the past year or so, BUT, John Stewart is awesome, and a favorite in this category. My pick: John Stewart.

Marg: Colbert, I think.

Outstanding Reality-Competition Program

The Amazing Race • CBS
Dancing With The Stars • ABC
Project Runway • Lifetime
So You Think You Can Dance • FOX
Top Chef • Bravo • Magical Elves
The Voice • NBC

Matt: I only watch The Voice and Project Runway. Out of the 2, I think I'd go with Project Runway.

Marg: SYTYCD.

So until the Emmy's air on Sunday, let this hype video tied you over. And let's all pray that the winners take JA'N's advice.
