So I didn't LOVE it, or hate it.
The first third of the flick was it's downfall in my opinion. It was all just a bit too much, with over saturated shots of the English landscape, the lead character was a bit special needs-esque, a drunk gimp Dad, and (my personal favourite) a snarky goose. When the actual war part of the movie clicked in it did pick up a bit, but overall it was still a bit over the top. Oh yeah, and the score kind of got on my nerves too.
Maybe the movie would have been more interesting if the snarky goose played a bigger role. Think about it... WAR GOOSE. A movie about a sassy goose who defied the odds, brought British and German troops together, gave a little girl a bit of happiness, stood by a soldier until his nobel end, ploughed a field and kept a family alive, leapt over trenches and oh lets say.... cured all forms of cancer. Who wouldn't see that movie right??
I still really want to see the play. In fact, after seeing the movie I think it would be great as a play as it's a pretty dramatic and theatrical story. But as a movie it was just too much. So if you need a good cry, watch War Horse. Otherwise save your pennies for your next trip to the Bulk Barn and get some extra malt balls.
War Horse: 3 defying out of 5 the odds.
