I love the Oscars.
No no, you don’t understand. I LOVE the Oscars. Deeply. I
often find myself youtubeing acceptance speeches from previous award shows over
and over again, like the one where that woman made everyone cry over concentration camps, and you can’t forget about Roberto Benigni! I could go on and on. I am
a bit obsessed.
So like any normal gay dude / Oscar lover I was up and ready on nomination morning for the announcement. At work I was checking every
entertainment news source I could find for the most up to date coverage. And
finally when they were all announced I was overcome with a sense of joy,
relief, and bewilderment.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close for best picture? Say
what now Ms. Hilly? Like many I was caught off guard that it got a
nomination for Best Picture, mostly because of it’s mixed reviews (a sad 46% on rottemtomatoes.com). But, unlike many who scoffed without even seeing the flick *cough* MARG *cough*, I decided to give it a shot. And you know what? I'm glad I did.
People's main complaint was that the movie objectified 911, and that it was a cheap shot at getting people to bring on the water works. I completely disagree, and I didn't even cry (which happens all the time, don't even get me started on Marley and Me). I thought the movie was charming, funny and if anything uplifting. For me 911 was merely the setting in which the story takes place. And let us not forget people that the movie is based on a book. It's not like you could take The Diary of Anne Frank and set it in a fairly land filled with rainbows and cupcakes. Circumstances are what they are!
So leave Extremely Close and Really Tall... or whatever it's called, alone people! See it before you get all Jenny Jone's on its ass. You may be pleasantly surprised.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close- 3.5 Tambourines out of 5 Viola Davis snot cries
