Marg: Okay -so first of all, New Girl writers have obviously been aware of some of the criticism the show has gotten
Matt which is what?
Marg: that
the character of Jess (and Zooey Deschenel herself) are too cute - that
no one is really like that, and that being adorable is an act.
Matt: Okay- I can see that. When Julia was all "I hate you Jess!" it kind of made me happy.
and I don't know why... I love Jess! I mean she IS adorkable!
But it was kind of nice to have someone call the bullshit
Marg: Well,
I think it was important for the world of the show for that to happen -
you can't have comedy without conflict, so if everyone got along all
the time it would be boring.
I think it was good that the writers pointed out that lots of people do feel exactly how Julia feels
But also, that acting like Jess isn't in fact "bullshit"
Matt: well it isn't, that was a bad word
Marg: which is what critics of the show keep insisting - that no grown woman would act like that
And news flash - I act like that a lot!
Matt: But
isn't that kind of what tv is? It's people acting and doing things that
are heightened from reality? It's called entertainment, no?
Marg: It is, not that you would think so from reading these articles though
Matt: Well critics are stupid. I thought it was a hilarious episode last night. Except I found myself puzzled. Like I had missed something.
Marg: Her lesbian gynecologist friend?
Matt: Was that lesbian character in the show before?and I just forgot?
YES!
Marg: I've never seen her before
Matt: They just kind of slipped that one in there didn't they....
Marg: I thought she was great, but I couldn't tell you her name haha
Matt: I'm all for another female character- suuure. But it would of been nice if the writers I don't know....introduce d her.
Matt: It's
like if Cheer's just randomly introduced Norm half way through the
season, and everyone still said "Norm" the first time he walked in.
The audience would be like WTF!?
That's kind of what happened.
Marg: hahaha
Maybe she was in an earlier episode and we just collectively forgot
Matt: I don't know... Shawn had no clue who she was either.
But whatever, I liked her so no harm done.
Marg: Yeah, good addition I thought
Have I mentioned to you how much I like the CeCe character?
I thought when the show started that she was just a bit of a turd
Marg: But she's really good, and they've revealed a surprising amount of subtle character detail about her
Matt: I don't not like Cece.
I like that she is starting to get developed a bit more.
Marg: I
think I always like characters when they demonstrate real friendships
with each other - (Lesley and Ann on Parks & Rec for example) -
CeCe's total willingness to wear the ribbon hat and defend Jess against
Julia made me smile last night
Matt: that wa s a good scene- aside from the lack of intro to lesbian.
Marg: they kind of did that with the Julia character last week though too
Matt: I don't like it..
Marg: yeah, it's a strange way to do things
Matt: But aside it was a good episode for New Girl.
Marg: High fives (that's my version of thumbs up)
Matt: Hopefully we will get another new one next week.... they've been taking a lot of breaks lately... lots
High Fives!
