Marg: hey
Matt: oh haay
Marg: where were you yesterday!?
Matt: I was here! I was going to say the same to you
Marg: I was online lots!
Matt: me too! maybe our online-ness was opposite
Marg: maybe it was
Matt: yesterday I was listening to Q, and they were talking about the use of the words "boy, man, guy, girl, woman and gal" and who identified as what. And there was an incredibly annoying feminist who wanted people to refer to her as gal
Marg: I was just thinking that gal is the very worst one
Matt: I think so too! her argument was that she was in her 20's and was too old to be a girl, but not at peek maturity for woman, so she wanted gal. And she said that it wasn't fair that men had 3 popular terms of identification and women only had 2. I hated her
Marg: We do have more than 2... and gal isn't one.
Matt: popular terms?
Marg: lady!
Matt: I was thinking bitch & hoe...
Marg: That's offensive, a popular term for a man isn't dickhead
Matt: haha- I was only joking!
Marg: but anyway: lady, ladies
Matt: I suppose...
Marg: It's my favourite
Matt: but that is still a term that many people would identify with older women...
Marg: I don't think so, not on the internet anyway
Matt: really?
Marg: absolutely. haven't you ever heard of lady blogs?
Matt: I guess I have heard people say "ladies" when referring to 20 somethings as a group, but never just "lady"... unless they are poking fun. no.
Marg: The Hairpin's tagline is ladies first! Lady Blogs - websites for ladies!
Matt: so would you say that lady is the female equivalent to guy?
Marg: Well, I think that if anything, words referring to women are more versatile than for men. So, ladies can be equivalent to guys, but also gentlemen. And girl can be equivalent to guy, and to boy
Matt: I think that girl is the most versatile.. more so than boy. I would refer to my 20 something girl friends as girls, and by boy friends as guys.
Marg: I agree that girl is the most common, and useful. I go by girl (and lady, haha). I called myself a woman the other day and Ben laughed at me.
Matt: haha- Oh Marg- you're such a dame
Marg: I wish more people threw dame around. I call people chicks sometimes, but like, never in a flattering way
Matt: no- chick isn't really a flattering term..
Marg: but I say thinks like "that chick was crazy"
Matt: Yeah- That's how I would use that term too
She was out of control, man. |
